This is important information for anyone who has a traffic ticket or and open warrant for a traffic ticket in Houston Texas.

Beginning on September 1st 2003 the Texas State Legislature enacted a law known as The Drivers Responsibility Program. This law requires the Texas Department of Public Safety to assess surcharges (fines) based on certain traffic offenses.

An individual’s driver’s license can be suspended as a result of not paying the surcharge.

I recently read an article in a blog (grits for breakfast), that the Texas State Legislature may have enacted a change in the law regarding the Drivers Responsibility Program. Indigent defendants may have gotten a break and fines may be reduced. I contacted DPS and no information is available yet and the law would not go into effect till 9-1-09.

I do not know but this law may be retroactive, if it is then a lot of people who have not been able to pay their surcharges may be of benefit.
